Comparative life cycle assessment of refrigeration systems for food cooling: eco-design actions towards machines with natural refrigerants

Refrigeration applications is responsible for approximately 17% of the total electricity and around 8% greenhouse gas emissions. This study presents a comparative life cycle assessment between two refrigeration systems, first operating with traditional fluid second natural refrigerant. The analysis was performed in accordance international standards ISO 14040/14044 adopted attributional approach. functional unit was: ‘the storage meat products, at temperature 0°C lifetime 10 years, refrigerating cells medium city supermarket’. Three different scenarios were analysed to investigate effect energy mix relation use machines. Results highlight how choice has higher on environmental performances machine reduction 10% whole cycle. Scenario shows such machines countries allows significant impacts mostly related phase. Eco-design actions listed connected hot spots specifying phases indicators involved.
